Did you know.......
that former West Bend High School student/athlete
Dan Schneiss was the starting Fullback and Co-Captain of the 1970 National Champion Nebraska Cornhuskers football
team that featured one of the college all-time great players, Halfback Johnny Rodgers. After winning the title, Schneiss had
the opportunity to meet President Nixon as is desribed in the following portion of an article taken from the Cornhuskers
                                    official website.
"Nebraska also received a national championship endorsement from President Richard Nixon, who proclaimed
the Cornhuskers No. 1, to the delight of 8,000 at the NU Coliseum, on Jan. 14, 1971. Co-captains Murtaugh and fullback Dan
Schneiss joined Coach Devaney alongside Nixon."
Following his college career Schneiss was drafted in the eleventh round by the NFL's
New England Patriots as a Tight End. Interestingly, Schneiss is not the only West Bender to have started for
Nebraska. A few years earlier HB Ron Kirkland played for the Huskers as well. He too was drafted by the NFL, going in
the ninth round of the 1967 draft to the Baltimore Colts. He went on to play in the Canadian Football League for the
                                    Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
